Koh Yao Noi’s history dates back to the 12th century AD when it was known as Khlong Siphan. At that time, the area was part of the Kingdom of Lopburi which was ruled by an enlightened Buddhist queen named Suriyothai. According to legend, Suriyothai had magical powers and could turn into any animal she wanted to. One day, she turned into a duck and swam down to the Gulf of Thailand where she founded Koh Yao Noi on an uninhabited island.

Suriyothai’s kingdom flourished and grew until it became one of the most powerful kingdoms in Southeast Asia. However, King Naresuan of Ayutthaya conquered Lopburi in 1555 and drove Suriyothai out of power. She fled south and founded her new kingdom on an island near Khlong Siphan called Hua Hin. Unfortunately, Hua Hin also fell to Naresuan’s armies later that year
